Seven Australian Brands Nailing Their Brand Messaging

25 September 2024 · 7 min read

Australia is home to a thriving community of great brands that have managed to stand out, not just for their products but for their powerful, authentic brand messaging. What we love about the Australian relaxed culture is it allows a breeding space for creativity, fun, humour and “inside jokes” that only Aussies living on the sunburnt land might understand.

These companies have leveraged their unique voices to connect deeply with their audiences, using messaging that points back to their core values and purpose. We've researched and listed our top seven Australian brands that we feel are absolutely nailing it with their brand messaging and doing something a little outside the box.

1. Cotton On: Casual, Accessible, and Community-Focused

Cotton On Brand Messaging

Cotton On, which started in Geelong in 1991, has grown into a global retail giant, but it still manages to feel accessible and familiar. The brand's messaging focuses on inclusivity, accessibility, and a laid-back, Aussie approach to style.

Using words that their Australian youth audience would resonate with like “epic” and phrases like “get amongst it”; connecting with similar part experiences “but we had our awkward teen years, too.” - Cotton On know their reader and how to speak to them.

Cotton On Campaign - Brand Messaging

On their website, you’ll see clever story telling in colloquial Australian language reminiscing on the ‘good old days’ when the brand first started selling:

Picture this: It’s 1988 and our first ‘shop’ is the boot of a Ford Bronco parked at The Beckley Market in Geelong, Australia. Inside? A stack of denim jackets; it was the start of something big.

Their "Cotton On Foundation" resonates well with customers who are looking to make positive impacts through their purchases. By blending fashion with a sense of purpose, Cotton On has created a message that goes beyond clothing—offering shoppers a way to contribute to meaningful change.

2. 4 Pines Brewing Company: Fun, Flavorful, and Community-Oriented

Four Pines Brand Messaging

4 Pines Brewing Company, born in Manly, NSW, is a craft beer brand with a personality as refreshing as its brews. Its messaging captures the fun-loving spirit of the brand, with slogans like "It's Always Beer O'Clock."

When you visit their website, 4 Pines' playful, tongue-in-cheek tone shines through. They use hyperbole to humorously amplify the impact of their small beer brand on the world, saying things like:

“When you pick up a 4 Pines beer, you set in motion a chain of events that might just make the world a better place.”

This lighthearted tone highlights their fun, down-to-earth personality while hinting at their commitment to positive change.

4 Pines connects with local pride and sustainability efforts, such as its commitment to being a "B Corp" and their 1% for the planet membership to help reduce its environmental impact. With their unique selling proposition “You drink the beer, we’ll do the good stuff” Four Pines aims to help their customers feel good about indulging in their beer, while helping out the environment.

3. Boody: Comfort, Sustainability, and Thoughtful Consumption

Boody has made a name for itself as a go-to brand for eco-conscious shoppers seeking comfortable, sustainable basics. Boldly positioning themselves as “we're a brand that's obsessed with comfort” - With an emphasis on "soft, sustainable, and simple," Boody’s messaging is clear and impactful.

You’ll even see a unique selling proposition supporting their pact to comfort: “If you don’t think we’re comfy, get your money back.*”

We especially love their "Make Yourself Comfortable" campaign, which creatively shines a light on the everyday discomfort women experience from ill-fitting bras and underwear. Through this campaign, Boody brings a refreshing, relatable approach to the conversation around comfort.

Boody’s messaging reflects the values of a mindful, quality-over-quantity lifestyle, appealing to customers looking to make thoughtful choices in what they wear.

Their brand messaging is clearly embedded in their brand foundations; defining their brand purpose to “Change Drinking Culture”
